Conditioning Temperature and Steam Quality for Pellet Durability
If you want a durable pellet, the real work happens before the die. Conditioning uses steam to add heat and moisture so the mash softens, the starch gelatinizes, and the natural binders activate. Get the temperature and steam quality right and durability follows. Get them wrong and no die setting will save the pellet.
The temperature window
For most feeds, conditioning is controlled to a mash temperature between 75 and 85 degrees C. Below about 75 degrees, not enough starch gelatinizes and the mash will not bind. Higher temperatures generally raise the pellet durability index, but there is a tradeoff: very high temperatures can hurt the stability of heat-sensitive additives like phytase.

Below 75 the mash does not bind well. Higher improves durability, but watch heat-sensitive enzymes.
Steam quality matters as much as temperature
Wet steam carries water droplets that overwet the mash and rob you of heat. You want dry, saturated steam delivered at a steady pressure. Good trapping, separators, and control valves keep the steam dry and stable, which is why steam equipment has a direct effect on pellet quality. This is where TLV steam systems earn their keep.
Particle size feeds conditioning
Steam and moisture penetrate fine particles faster than coarse ones. A consistent, fine grind conditions more evenly and pellets better. If durability is uneven, check your grind before you chase the conditioner. See hammermill screen selection.
Temperature and die speed work together
Conditioning temperature and die speed interact. At lower conditioning temperatures, slowing the die can improve durability. At higher conditioning temperatures, you tend to get good durability across a range of die speeds. If you are limited on one lever, the other can help.
Put it together
