How bucket elevator capacity is figured

A leg moves grain in a string of buckets on a belt. Its capacity comes down to how much each bucket holds, how often a bucket passes, and how heavy the material is. Put simply: bucket volume, times how full it runs, times how many buckets pass per minute, times the density of what you are moving.

Belt speed and spacing set how many buckets pass. Faster belt or tighter spacing moves more, up to the point where buckets stop filling and discharging cleanly. Fill factor is the honest part of the math. Few legs run their buckets completely full, so a working number around 75 percent keeps the estimate realistic.

Getting a good estimate

Bucket capacity is the water-level volume of one bucket, which your supplier lists by model in cubic inches. Use the real belt speed, not the motor nameplate, and match the density to what you actually run. Corn is about 45 pounds per cubic foot; lighter meals and pellets are less, which is why a leg that handles corn easily can fall short on a denser or a lighter product.

Why is my real capacity lower than the number?

Usually fill factor. Worn buckets, a fast belt that throws material, poor boot feeding, or up-legging a light product all pull the fill down. Drop the fill factor to match what you see and the estimate will line up.
