Why conditioning moisture matters

Conditioning is where steam adds heat and moisture to the mash before it reaches the die. That moisture softens the feed, activates natural binders, and lets the pellet form under lower pressure. Run it too dry and the mill loads up, the pellet comes out hard to make, and your die and rolls wear faster. The goal is to bring the mash up to a moisture the mill can run without fighting it.

This tool uses a straight mass balance to show how much moisture you need to add to move mash from where it is now to your target. Most of that moisture comes from steam at the conditioner rather than liquid water, but the amount to add is the same either way.

A simple runnability scale

Chandler works off a rule of thumb for conditioned moisture. It is a starting point, not a spec, and your die, formula, and steam quality all shift it:

Frequently asked

Is this water or steam?

The number is the moisture you need to add, whatever the source. In practice most of it is steam at the conditioner, which adds heat as well as water. Liquid water at the mixer is a separate correction, and there is a corn moisture calculator for that.

What if my target reads too dry?

If the runnability marker sits low, you are asking the mill to pellet a dry mash. Raise the target, check that your steam is dry and at the right pressure, and confirm your die compression ratio is not too high for the ration.

Note: results are a starting point from a standard moisture balance. Confirm with your own moisture readings and adjust for shrink, steam quality, and your finished-product spec.
