How it works: corn makes up most of the mix, so every 1% swing in corn moisture moves your mixed mash by about that fraction (≈0.67% at 67% corn). This is a starting point. Confirm with your own moisture readings (NIR / oven) and adjust for shrink and mixer variation. Figures reproduce Chandler’s reference table at 67% corn, 12.5% target, 15.5% calibration.
How much water should you add to feed?
Incoming corn is rarely the same moisture two loads in a row. When it comes in drier than your normal, your finished mash comes out drier too, and a dry mash pellets harder, wears dies and rolls faster, and gives up finished-product yield you already paid for. Adding a measured amount of water back at the mixer holds your mash on target so the pellet mill runs the way it’s set.

Why does drier corn need more water?
Corn is the biggest single ingredient in most feed formulas, so it drives the moisture of the whole mix. At 67% corn, every 1% the corn drops pulls your mixed mash down about 0.67%. To get back to your target you replace that missing moisture with water, and the drier the corn, the more you add.
What moisture should mixed mash be?
Most mills target somewhere around 12–13% going into the conditioner, but your number depends on your formula, your die, and how the pellet runs. Set your own target in the tool’s Mill settings panel and the table and results update to match.
Is added water the same as conditioning steam?
No. This tool covers water added at the mixer to correct dry ingredients before conditioning. Steam added at the conditioner is a separate step (heat + moisture for gelatinization) and a separate calculation.
