Belt Misalignment: A Fire Risk You Can Measure

A bucket elevator moving grain is one of the highest fire and explosion risks in a feed mill. Grain dust is fuel, the leg is an enclosed space, and all it needs is an ignition source. One of the most common ignition sources is also one of the most preventable: a belt rubbing where it should not.

How a rubbing belt starts a fire

When a bucket elevator belt drifts off track, it rubs against the leg casing or the pulley flange. Friction makes heat. In a leg full of fine, dry dust, a hot spot is all it takes to ignite, and an ignition in an enclosed leg can become an explosion. The belt does not have to break. It just has to rub long enough to get hot.

Catch the misalignment early and you remove the heat before it can start anything.

The point is to measure it, not guess

Walking the leg and listening is better than nothing, but a belt can drift between checks, and the inside of a running leg is exactly where you cannot see. The reliable answer is continuous monitoring: sensors that watch the belt and the bearings all the time and shut the leg down the moment something goes wrong.

What a monitored leg watches

  • Belt alignment. Rub blocks or sensors on both sides of the belt detect contact before it builds heat.
  • Bearing temperature. A failing bearing is another classic ignition source. Temperature sensors flag it before it runs hot.
  • Belt speed and slip. A slipping or slowing belt signals a plug or a drive problem.
  • Plugged discharge. Level and motion sensors catch a choke before it backs up the leg.
Prevention is the cheap part

Hazard monitoring costs a fraction of one fire. It protects the equipment, the mill, and the people in it. On a bucket elevator, it is not optional gear.
