Choosing the Right Pellet Die: Compression Ratio Explained
Ask two mills why their pellets run differently and the answer often comes down to one number: the die compression ratio. It sets how hard your pellet forms, how much your mill has to work, and how fast your die wears. Here is what it means and how to use it.
What compression ratio is
Compression ratio is the working length of a die hole divided by its diameter, written as length to diameter, or L/D. A 4 millimeter hole with 40 millimeters of working thickness is a 10 to 1 ratio. The rolls push mash through that hole, and the longer the hole is relative to its width, the more the feed is squeezed on the way through.

A higher ratio makes a harder, more durable pellet. A lower ratio makes a softer pellet and lets the mill run more freely.
Higher is not always better
It is tempting to reach for a high ratio to make a firm pellet. But push it too high for the ration and the mill loads up, capacity drops, and the die can choke. Push it too low and the pellet falls apart in handling. The right ratio is a balance between pellet quality and throughput for your specific formula.
Fat and fiber move the target
Formula drives the number more than anything:
- Added fat lubricates the die. Fat-heavy rations slip through easily, so they need a higher ratio to hold pellet quality.
- High fiber grips the die and builds friction, so fibrous rations call for a lower ratio.
- Molasses and liquids soften the mix and generally point toward a lower ratio.
Typical starting points
- High-fat or high-molasses rations: about 6 to 8 to 1.
- Cattle and range cubes: about 7 to 9 to 1.
- General poultry and swine feed: about 9 to 12 to 1.
- Hard, durable pellets and aquafeed: about 12 to 15 to 1.
Measure the working length, not the total thickness. If the die is relieved or counterbored on the feed side, subtract that relief. Only the straight part of the hole does the compressing.
