Pellet Mill Troubleshooting: Common Problems and Fixes

The pellet mill is where feed-mill problems show up first, and the amp meter, the pellet, and your ears will tell you most of what you need to know. This is a quick-reference guide to the common problems, what causes them, and where to start.

High amps or a climbing load

A high load means the mill is fighting the die. The usual causes are dry, under-conditioned mash; rolls set too tight; a compression ratio too high for the ration; or a worn or blinded die. Fix the moisture first, then check roll setting. Full detail in reading your pellet mill amps.

Low amps and soft pellets

A low load is not always good news. It can mean the roll is slipping instead of pressing, the feed is light and uneven, or the mash is too wet and passing through with no work. The result is a soft, weak pellet. See why your pellets are soft.

Plugging or choking the die

A choke usually comes from overfeeding into a rising load, a sudden loss of steam, or a cold, wet start. Back the feed off, restore conditioning, and bring the mill back up gradually.

Protect the die

When the load spikes, back the feed off. Pushing more feed into a plugging die is how you shear safety pins and score a die.

Too many fines

High fines mean the pellet is breaking down, at the mill or in handling. Trace it back to conditioning, die compression, and grind, the same levers that drive durability. Put a number on it with the PDI calculator.

Noise, vibration, or heat

New noise, vibration, or a hot bearing is a mechanical warning. Worn rolls or roll bearings, a failing mainshaft bearing, or a die out of round all show up this way. Do not run through it. If the mill is due, our rebuild guide walks through dies, clamps, and the mainshaft.

Capacity dropping off

Falling throughput at the same settings usually points to a worn die that has lost open area as the holes wear or blind, tired rolls, or conditioning that has drifted. Check the die and rolls, confirm your steam, and re-verify roll clearance.

Where to start

  1. Read the meter. The amp load points you at most problems.
  2. Check conditioning. Moisture and steam fix a surprising share of them.
  3. Check the die and rolls. Compression ratio, wear, and roll setting.
  4. Listen for mechanical trouble. Noise, heat, and vibration mean stop and look.
